Why we use LiFePO4 for home batteries
For a stationary home battery, the priorities are different from those of a phone or a car. Space and weight are rarely the constraint; lifespan, safety and cost per cycle are. That is why SunHestia uses lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) chemistry.
Long cycle life
LiFePO4 cells tolerate thousands of charge-discharge cycles with modest degradation. For a home battery that cycles daily, that translates into a long service life — which is why we can offer a 10-year warranty.
Inherent stability
The chemistry is thermally stable and resistant to the conditions that drive degradation and failure in other lithium chemistries. That makes it well suited to a device that lives on a wall in a home for a decade.
Cobalt-free
LiFePO4 contains no cobalt, which simplifies the supply chain and avoids a material associated with well-documented environmental and social concerns.
The trade-off is a slightly lower energy density than some alternatives — but for a home battery that simply means a slightly larger enclosure, a reasonable price for the safety and longevity gained.
